Love the advanced & custom config depth February 25, 2010 P. Lyons Above & beyond my expectations.. Even with all the positive reviews already posted here. I'm sort of a control freak, as are my clients, and nothing is left out in terms of custom configuration, advanced security, etc. WITH CODE. Bravo x 10!
Good book if you don't have a background with Reporting Services. February 24, 2010 Ron (California) This book was very good for me because I don't have a background in SSRS.
I've tried 3 other SSRS books; but, they all seem to assume you've got a background with SSRS and so the skimmed over the old material and focused on what's new. This book did a very good job in explaining SSRS, it did not presume prior knowledge on the part of the reader. The exercises were clear and informative and I didn't have any trouble installing the Galactic database. I highly recommend this book for people who are starting out with SSRS.
Before buying this book make sure you instal the "Galactic" database. February 18, 2010 E. Litvin (CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is very good written, and I don't want waste my time to repeat many previous reviews. However one question posted in negative review remains unanswered. The contest of this book is based on you the reader being able install "Galactic" database. The download of this database is free and I would suggest - before buying this book make sure the "Galactic" database is installed.
Outstanding! Get up to speed fast and all examples work perfectly; no typos! October 13, 2009 Database Goddess (SCS, MI USA) This book has been great for getting up to speed on SRSS (for creating reports) fast. I am an Oracle DBA on the unix platform so I bought a few books on SQL Server and SQL Server Reporting Services to familiarize myself with it. I have worked my way through this book and I have been able to apply the techniques to my "real life" projects. Thanks to the author and to his wife, whom he mentions in the "About the Author" section because she proofread the book and worked through every example to make sure all the detail was there and correct. I will look for other books by this author.
Good intro to reporting services September 3, 2009 B. LaPlante (Irvine, CA USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have long experience with other competitive tools and I found this book to answer 90% of my questions about Reporting Services. After having worked half way through I felt very confident of being able to create useful reports.
The book is more verbose than needed - the first half of the book the step-by-step instructions include a common set of steps that need to be done for every report. The good news is you can (almost) jump to any example and be able to follow the steps. The bad news is you start to wonder if we could have killed a few fewer trees by putting a reference in rather than repeating the same thing endlessly.
